Steambirds is an independent turn based action strategy game in development. The trailer looks like it could be fun and we could perhaps learn something from it as well(once there is more to see/test), especially in regards to the combat interface. It has received some praise here. The article also mentiones another game - Critical Mass with an apparently similar control mechanism.

edit: There is another video, showing a tiny bit more about the combat interface.
