Here's a GameSpot article about the history of 4X games. Most of the games are really worth a try.

"Constraining players' sense of control without frustrating them isn't easy, which is why the trend toward micromanagement might be seen as the path of least resistance. If Master of Orion III succeeds, though, the macromanagement school of space empire game design may finally have a worthy representative."

Dang, I really wanted to know how the story ended!

I have updated the list based on the information you posted here. I added also two more games:
- Andromeda Conquest - from history page on Gamespot
- Star Lords - just found it recently. Not the great hit but interesting game

I'll see if I can put also more info to the list, like year of publishing and short description, or maybe link to info webpage or something

I started to build a list based on a year of the first release. Year - Title - Platform - Links, are given. So far only two games, but later I will complete it for all games.

some additional info would be nice, like high-budget, independent, shareware, free, or open source. or in the case of stars! supernova, well, dead/canceled.

I'll see what info might fit here also. On the other hand, the given links should direct to places where this info will be supported. Game prices change or are different with various sellers. It would be good if each game was one line only, and there will be more links (the best links).

Space Empires 4 - by in far the best game ive played - muche better than MOO3 (dont blast me lol) just my opinion - a final version 1.91 has added a few new features and fixed a whole range of small bugs with SE4 and SE5 is currently in development + they are taking on fan and player suggestions to make it the best game possible.

Emperor of the rising sun, there might've been such a game but not space strategy; I think that was Emperor of the Fading Suns with a mistaken name...

Heh, its a personal opinion - horses for courses innit? Did IGIII actually get released? The reason i didnt list it was because (IIRC) it was either canned, or it got transformed into more of a 'Homeworld' type of game. May be mistaken though.
IG3 = Nexus: The Jupiter Incident. Think its a bit more focused on tactical battles now but still has some 4X elements (like seen here).

Browsing the net can bring really nice findings. Check this game, which is now freeware. initially DOS, but now windows too. Anacreon, I haven't seen it in this thread before:

It's the same game I just mentioned, it's an old favorite of mine. I just found out it has a new Win version, while browsing for links to put in my post, and I'm so glad I can play it again, on XP :)

Star Chamber

I'm suprised no one mentioned this one, it's my current favourite:

Star Chamber

It's sort of a cross between a 4X space game and Magic: The Gathering.
My two biggest obsessions in one neat little package!

Their free trial thing is definitely worth checking out.
