This thread will be sink for icons for the different theories associated with each of the five catagories.
Because we need so many, keep in mind that the icon designs might not end up being used for the theory that inspired its creation.

edit(pd):
The Icons will be shown on the research screen and will be 128x128 in resolution. You should work with 2 or 3 colors at most(black bg, white logo and possibly a grey shade too). They will be colored by code with the category color.
Anyone is welcome to take part and create icons.

Please refer to this page about all technologies, their descritions and missing icons.

Simply reply to this thread, mention the theory and post your icon, thanks.
We would be very thankfull to receive sketches too, no need for finished icons.

Yes, those icons look nice, but Obiwan did you look at them at a size used by fo. IMO, some of them are to detailed.

I'm using a monitor setting of 1280x1024. Based on that i would say, if fo use those icon in game at 1/4 size as they are now displayed they would be quit large. I would expect that those icon will be displayed around 32x32. At some placed maybe 64x64.

no, they will be displayed at 128x128, different from the category icons, the theory icons won't be scaled down. they are supposed to be displayed that 'large'. have a look at this:

@pd, if every f.i. growth tech would be displayed with that big icon (more a picture), it would be a wast of space. I can see an 32x32 icon on a list of already discovered techs

growth icon - stardate 1234 - Orbital Farming
science icon - stardate 1235 - ...
and so on.

BTW, i would place that icon on the left side of "Orbital Farming" (same level) and at size 32x32. This would give you the chance to let the text go beneath the Add .. and Center ... buttons.

EDIT :oops:
I see, those icon aren't supposed to be category icons. My mistake. But than, why are they icon-ish??? Shouldn't they be nicer, means more colorful ... (like the planet-icons) ???

it's not a waste of space, because in the same area there will be displayed a picture for applications and refinements. having a picture/icon for techs was planed since the beginning and isn't debatable. also i want to have a stylistic difference between theories and applications -> icon-, symbolic-like pics for theories and rendered or painted pictures(atleast more colorfull and detailed) for apps.

hehe, i already told that i was mistaken by my assumption that those icons are category icons . If they are tech icons that's fine (also the size). Yet, i don't see the need for iconish tech pictures, but i guess you will show me ;-).

OK, no need to discuss any further, there are many tech icons missing ;-P

I like the basic idea, but you should keep in mind that there might / will eventually be application techs for non-tangible stuff, like governments or espionage attacks or automatic instant benefits that don't require a building to get. This probly doesn't apply to v0.3 though.

And so I'm clear on what's happening, is the plan to have more detailed / colourful images for applications, like Mystiqq's image as seen here: http://www.freeorion.org/forum/viewtopi ... 8257#18257
