hi, there are two new icons:

Artificial heavenly bodies:
Image

Economic spectroscopy:

-similar, but NOT based on any previous icons-

as you said, its better to create more icons now and improve it later, so I'll try.

IMHO it's a good thing if similar technologies have somewhat similar icons— as long as you can tell the difference.

I could use another (different frequency) sine function on the right side... It's pretty sparse visually, and just two sines isn't much of a fourier series decomposition. But don't delay making something new in order to change it, unless so-inclined yourself.

heh, you are right, I made it look more "Fourierish" and added some stuff, hope its better now.
the Artificial heavenly bodies icon look empty too, but I dont know, what to fiil it with, maybe something like planet ring..
damn, lack of inspiration comes to me.. :roll:

Why does the middle-frequency sine wave stop before the rightmost grid column?

Maybe make it only partially constructed, with sticky-out bits of superstructure like the Death Star 2 in ROTJ? Alternatively, make a bunch of them around a ring, co-orbiting the star.

Is the list on page 1 up to date? (i know i'm being lazy)

Also i'd like to put in my preference for the simpler, SMAC style of the category icons. Obviously many will need to be more complicated, but that simplicity is worth aiming at.

No matter how much we invoke KISS, FO will be a complicated game. Simple, direct, clean icons for techs and so-forth can help mitigate the potential information overload.

Mostly. Nobody's updated it in a few months. The techs Artificial Heavenly Bodies and
Economic Spectroscopy have icons, but aren't marked.

I'm making some modifications to the techs content though. I'm changing some theories to applications if they sound like they should be (eg. Fusion Generation), and to just reduce the total number of theories. Thare are also numerous application techs that were never listed on the "list of theories".

I think the wiki would be a better way to organize the list, since it can be updated more easily. Discussion about specific icons should still be done in the thread though.

Anyway, the current set of techs, with type, category and graphic (if entered in techs.txt) are below, though I might have missed a few icons (ie. not put them into techs.txt) that are in SVN.

I snagged tech.txt from SVN, and added it to my RC4 compiled version of FO. FO crashes on startup. I don't know if RC4 and RC5+ are incompatible in this respect, or if there's a problem with tech.txt.

I think the best way (for me) to organize this is to screen-capture various tech tree categories, and to add the completed icons over the tree. It would give a good overview. However, i probably should abstain until you (Geoff) are done rearranging things— until it's time to stir things up again.

But i also created a wiki page.

You can probably fix the crash by removing all the short_description lines from the file, one per tech. If that deosn't work, any futher crashes should be due to specific techs' effects stuff being different. It should saw which tech is the problem in the crash output, and you can fix it by removing that tech's effectsgroups entry, which looks something like:
Code:
    effectsgroups = [
        EffectsGroup
            scope = And [
                OwnedExclusivelyBy TheEmpire Source.Owner
                Planet
                Star type = BlackHole
                PrimaryFocus Research
            ]
            activation = Source
            effects = SetMaxResearch Target.MaxResearch + 4
    ]

Remove everything between equal-indented [ and ], and the preceeding effectsgroups =

Edit: Regarding the wiki page, I put up two test techs in a table layout that includes the images from SVN, the tech name, type, category, and short description. Would this be more useful if done for the whole lot? I can probably write some code to output wiki-formatted table text from the FO program, in order to make updating easier (for anyone with an update copy of FO anyway).

Style of Tech Icons:

Tech icons should be as clean and simple as possible while still conveying the concept. The tech icons of Alpha Centari, and our category icons are a good stylistic model.

Notice here how at smaller sizes, most of the icons turn to unreadable static while the category icons are still recognizable.

icons should:
• Be on a transparent background
• Be recognizable at smaller sizes
• Have a strong silhouette
• Make minimal use of gradients, or variations in tone
• Avoid tiny details which carry the meaning

Somehow i never read the above, 'till now.
Yes, that would be very cool.

Artificial Black Hole

Eleazar: please post your tech icons here in case other artists do not check the svn. (or update the list)

Update: I've made some tech icons transparent:

genetic engineering, genetic medicine, infrastructure ecology, pure energy metabolism, singularity generation, symbiosis biology, temporal mechanics, translingustic thought, xenoarchaeology, xenological genetics

[Edit] Artificial black hole updated.

Will there be a point release anytime soon? I'd like to see the tech icons in game (as well as all the other new stuff).

[EDIT]

redid stellar tomography because the old image sucked:

Is that the new one, or the old one? I'm not really getting the idea with this one... What's the % sign represent...?
