Geoff, could you perhaps provide a mid and full zoomed in screenshot? Thanks!

It's nice to see results so quickly. :)

BTW i don't want to increase the size of the nebulae any more... assuming we can get something like the gaseous stuff to work.

And while we considering our ordinary nebulae, IMHO it would be best if we limited each nebula to appearing once per galaxy. Most of our nebula graphics are quite distinctive... and should be if they are to serve as landmarks. And one of those "eyeball" nebulae is enough for any galaxy. A few of them are not so bad when repeated (like nebulae2), but all in all i think it's best if each one is unique per galaxy.

Since we currently have only 14 graphics that will be a decrease in nebulae for our larger galaxies (which tend to have around 17 nebulae), but we'll get more graphics sometime, and 14 is not excessively few.

I have to say makeing every nebular unique sounds like a very good idea.

Using the latest reduced resolution gassy substance textures seems to improve FPS a bit, although the cooling fan still kicks in and runs continuously while looking at the galaxy map, which it never used to do until the sidepanel was opened.

That looks really nice. I mentioned to eleazar privately, but everyone else should know, I'm going to make the main map's rendering speed a priority. I hope to have a much faster frame rate some time this week or next.

Thanks for the screenshots Geroff - I agree, it looks good. Although there is some minor artefacts/pixelation in the full zoomed image. Are the sprites at this stage 100% or scaled up?

Thanks for letting us know, sounds great tzlaine.

They are 128x128 pixel images. At max zoom they are scaled up about 1000%

Also the gaseous stuff should probably be set to render underneath the nebulae. Currently it sometimes nearly covers it up.

Is this looking possible?

It's actually already done. It was checked in Monday or Tuesday I think.

Ah, great.
I can seldom get the sourceforge page to work that displays recent commits.
http://svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/freeo ... /?view=log

How is the framerate now, compared to previously? Any chance for a RC soon? :)

Eleazar, you don't need the sourceforge page, just update SVN with a client of your choice and have a look at the logs.

There is no "client of my choice". None of the mac clients work well for me... can't even update the log reliably. So i use the command line, since it's 10 times faster... not that i like it, but in this circumstance it's the lesser evil.

thanks, that worked 2 out of 3 times, which is useable.

like pd asked, what kind of frame-rate are we getting? can we go back to 256x256 gaseous textures?

Well, it's as fast as it's going to get, and that's about 160% faster than it was before, IIUC (5 FPS -> 13 FPS on Geoff's slightly older hardware). So, I'd say, ask Geoff to roll back his textures to the 256x256 ones still in Subversion, and ask him to tell you how they do. I get 60-80 FPS no matter what I do, running on relatively new hardware, and so I'm a bad judge.

P.S. If you want to get an email every time there's a commit (and who doesn't?), you can subscribe to freeorion-programmers on SourceForge.

Thanks for the information. I guess, there has to be a switch in preferences in this case, with a hint, that it won't work properly on older systems. I'm usnig quite new hardware as well, so I'm looking forward to the next RC(maybe once Geoff is finished with the ship design screen?).
