Hi, i try to get an acceptable spiral galaxy map generator. This is one of the generated maps. I'm a programmer not an artist so i would like to hear some opinions.

Ronald.

Be honest!

Try to not have them have so many one line spirals. They should taper off to one line from like 4 or something, it just looks really unnatural, and prolly isn't so good for game play either, have those lines.

What That Guy said is right. However, for a 0.1 release this is great, and we can tweak the generation in future versions.

i'll try to sound intelligent by repeating what the other two said plus a spin.

1) it looks a little "straight", almost like a it was the product of some computer algorithm :-)

2) it's a milestone. Don't worry about it. That's a *very* minor detail

3) here is a quick fix to the problem: add a scatter() function as the very last item in the star creation algorithm which randomly moves a star +/- X and +/- Y. Possibly even add the scatter constant as a user defined variable. ("variable constants"?!)

Aye, much too straight lined, though the core is definately good. Maybe make the arms like 2-3 stars "thick"......Anyway it's great.

That looks more natural and better, indeed.

Yeah, it's great now! I think the core could be a bit bigger, but it's still fine.

That looks brilliant! Very natural. like the way actually LOOKS like a spiral galaxy. played lots of games that say you can define if its spiral or not, and everytime i couldnt see anything spiral like in it at all!!!

PS this is WAY off topic, but looking at that map i'd hate to start on one of the three stars in the bottom left corner (Alterf, Tania, Ixchel). Looks like you'd be stuck there for a LONG time in gameplay terms. lol :)

[EDIT] This really doesn't matter, and by looking at the screenies it isn't programming, but the background texture i presume is both the stars and that nebulas?? The nebulas are HUGE! I mean, i know there huge in real like, but none span a galaxy!!! They should only be a few (5?) planets wide max!! anyway, its not a problem, just one of those things...!! :D

Top stuff - very nice to look at.
I like the gas clouds, I dont think its 2 unrealistic. But then I can see the other side of the coin too.
So the important question is how much will they effect gameplay, or are they background eye candy only.

If you plan to get close to anybody else i suggest you use a different (player-) name when playing fo.

Nebulas are background and the little white stars are also background but within four layers (if you move left/right you get a 3d effect)

You do not see any planets. Thats are the systems. And as PowerCrazy's hero would say, it's not reality we striving for.
