Just an idea.
Parallax scrolling in mapwindow works great on background. How about, adding that to stars as well? When generating map, each star would be given a different depth value randomly (3-4 layers would do). The "height" difference should not be a big one, just some minor movement compared to each other when scrolling. This would have no gameplay effect, just minor eyecandy to add illusion of 3D'ness.

Dont know about the coding side, and how more difficult the drawing of starlanes would become, and can't really judge beforehand would it look good or would it mess the interface too much, but as an idea, it might work and add more feel to the map.

Comments? Experiences? Anyone from coding team to say if this is implementable?

Hi,

i didn't looked at the code right now, but placing stars in different layers shouldn't be difficult. (Background starmap work this way, if i remember correctly). Drawing the starlane is maybe a different story.

I'm currently on sidepanel (were the planets are shown) and pd shortly showed some nice images, so i tried to add some eyecandy at this place. It's looks great (not smooth enough now, but great)

I didn't plan to do much more for eyecandy right now. (I was in love with rotating planets from the beginning.)

Releases are the main goal!

Ronald.

yep. slowly rotating planets are goodlooking. If it works well on code side, I'm certain we will give you all the planets with rotating animation, just give us some time to produce them (0.2). :)

This effect is in no rush, but give it a thought if you can find a way to draw starlanes with this effect, it would be cool to have in 0.2 when we reach that. (or delegate it to some of your coders, I'm certain someone would like to chew on this)
