Sound/Music "License"?

#1 Post by Hexxium »

Hi, I've been lurking on the forum for about a year, and intended to help with programming. But since I stll haven't had the time to learn C++, I thought I might do something useful in the meantime, make some music for example ;)

But first I'd like to know what the legal aspects are when I contribute pieces of music to FO. Will everyone be allowed to use and distribute them? Even for commercial projects?

Or is music subject to a license similar to the one the artwork guys have? In my opinion it's not that good for music, especially for pieces you can "use" (i.e. hear, distribute, broadcast...) as standalone music.

Standalone Music / SFX

I think the music and the graphical licences are pretty much the same. They're released under a GNU, so anyone can freely take and distribute it for non-commercial reasons. I think this also protects the developers somewhat if a scummy from the outside decides they like the artwork and chooses to copyright it as their own work. They could then charge the DEV's for using 'their' copyrighted work that the FO team slaved upon.

Because it's open-source work, any other open source program could also use your work (provided they ask and give credit where credit is due).

(I also believe that if anyone uses copyrighted samples that they don't own (IE: we rip out chunks of the bearnaked ladies and mix it with brittney spears to create a monster) they may be looking for trouble if FO becomes really really popular :) )

The artwork and music has thus far fallen under the creative commons licence. Anyone can use FO media, even for commerical purposes, without asking, so long as they credit the author.

If you've got some really nice tracks, I could see the rules being bent a little. Tyreth would probably be the dood to talk to.

That's exactly what I don't like about it. I don't mind if people copy my music or use it for non-commercial purposes. But what if my music ends up being used in some cheap porn movie (yes I am paranoid ;) )... well yeah they'll have to give me credit

I'm not a professional. I'm not experienced in making game music either. So I don't expect that to happen, and maybe it's not worth the effort. But still, the music I make means something to me. I'll have to think about it ;)

haha - sorry I chuckled at that one :) Ir reminded me of the family guy episode where John Williams was running for a "woody" for his musical composition in a porn movie.

Most porn movies have a pretty dull soundtrack, like a boom-chicka-boom boom organ. (Yeah I know, I've licked my share of peanut butter). I don't see them taking some space-aged tune and mixing it in do "ooooh, aaaah, oh yes oh yes".

Of course, I've been wrong before, and heaven knows I will be proven wrong again.

I will never be able to look at peanut butter the same way again.
