Hello. :)

I have installed FO 0.3.8 on Windows XP and have installed .Net framework after that. But application only shows message about incorrect settings and suggests reinstalling (Message was in Russian and I don't know exact message in English). I have no idea what to do. :(

The second thing is after installation I have got a bunch of junk in my D:\ folder. "dir D:" contents:

I think, using disk D: as temporary directory isn't good idea. :(
Original intallation file was name was D:\Downloads\FreeOrion-0.3.8-Setup

This is a bug with the Microsoft Visual Studio redistributable installer. Hopefully it will be fixed for the next release, but for now, you'll just have to manually delete those files.

A few others have been having issues with this as well. Our best guess is that it's also an issue with the redist installer. Some people have reported that installing previous versions of FreeOrion, such as RC5 or RC6 and then installing v0.3.8 over top might work.

My problem is a little different, when I installed 0.3.8 over a previous copy, it still tried to use the stuff from my copy of 0.3.1-RC7, and it's wreaking havoc with the system.
For example, I was using colonywars.ttf for FO's typefaces in RC7, and now every time I install FO, regardless of whether I uninstalled it before, it keeps looking for colonywars.ttf like nothing had happened. So I insert the needed type face, it starts up, and the splash screen is missing, plus a host of problems with the tech screen. It's really wierd and jarring, but I have no idea what happened or how to fix it.

Any ideas what might be going on?

Have you tried to delete the config.xml?

I had the problem where the configuration wasn't set up properly. i took the advice of 'pd' and installed the 0.3 RC6 version first and installed the 0.3.8 version on top of it and it worked.

Hopefully this might help some other people who have similar problems.

Cheers 'pd'.

p.s. i managed to get to the main menu. i assume the game works. can't wait to have a go...

I have the same problem, but in 0.3.11. installing Visual Studio 2005 redistributable SP1 (!!!) from Microsoft web-site solved this. In addition, installing of this redist does not put any files in "D:\".
