I wanted to switch to using my SVN copy of freeorion, without having to copy it out (for fastest testing).
I tried to reset the option for resource folder to my SVN copy, but choose poorly. (FYI it's the default folder inside FreeOrion)
After this, Orion crashed every time I tried to start it, until I dug up the configuration file in my profile and manually fixed the error.
In windows this was %appdata%\freeorion\config.xml - look for resource-dir
