Game doesn't run in Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit

Hi,

I downloaded the freeorion-0.4.3_amd64.deb file from the Sourceforge link. Then I opened it with the Ubuntu Software Center (double-clicked on it), choose "install", and it all seemed to go fine. Then a new general-looking application icon appears on the Launcher; it reads "Freeorion", though. When I click on it, nothing happens, a black window pops into view, but poofs out of sight in a second again. Nothing further happens :-(

For the record, I'm an unexperienced Ubuntu user, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do any files get created in ~/.freeorion/ ? freeorion.log and ogre.log might be useful if you can locate them.

This issue was reported already, but I didn't bother to investigate further because the reporter compiled the game for himself. I will take a look at it the next days.

Ah, indeed. And luckily there seems to be a step-by-step copy-and-paste-guide to work around all the parsers and commits and libraries and whatnots. Thanks for the pointer! I'll give a try to the compiling thing.

glad to hear it. The initial setup is a lil hassle, but if you compile it yourself it *will* run just fine in Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit.
