Windows 8.1 always crashes
Every single time I try to launch the game on my PC running Windows 8.1, the game crashes before loading. I can't figure out what to do, especially since there does not appear to be a config.xml file anywhere in the games files. Help please?

The location of config.xml is described on this page. For Windows 8, it should be similar to Windows 7, if I recall correctly.
More important is to look at freeorion.log and ogre.log which would be at the same location.

If you are using a nvidia graphic card you might try the test-builds. The latest release version might still have a bug that causes crashes with nvidia cards.
I'm using Win 8.1 myself and don't have problems since the bugfix.
