Hm, really strange... unfortunately I'm a bit out of my depth here. One thing that comes to my mind, as obviously there seems to be a problem with images/textures: A few months ago Nagilum recompressed most/all of our png graphic files. Could that be a cause for the issues we see here?

Anyway, I made an installer package of an experimental test build of the SDL branch. @Bh'Og: Please download and install that test build and report back if it solves your problems. Note: Although you can of course start a game, you won't be able to really play with that build, as certain critical components of the game are still broken in the SDL branch. But it should be sufficient to test if the graphic issues turn up or not.

.. now I'm totally stumped ... came home from work, surgically removed the wife from the PC (chat ...), logged in, and everything worked fine - even "FreeOrion-7784-Test-Win32"?!?
(actually, I looked into rescaling and -compressing the building icon images, starting with the palace, only to notice that all graphics suddenly where ok.)

So for now, I have no idea what caused the errors, because nothing was done with the PC other than restarting it, and that I did several times in the last days already :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?:

I have a guess. It's pure guesswork.

Most of the shots and errors you've reported recently appear to be a specific file or file corrupted. I suspect, at some point in loading processes, the PNGs that the game reders into different things weren't, in some cases, loading correctly, and it was a different batch each time. Hence the asteroids display correctly for a bit, then go weird, then display correctly—a file or two hasn't loaded correctly, the rest have.

That's what it looks like to me, and I have no idea why, but given the symptoms it's the best explanation I can suggest.

Hello, I'm back ... and no, I was occupied otherwise, I didn't had to replace the drive and/or reinstall windows.

I checked the windows sys log files, and yes, windoze complained about problems reading from "harddisk 3".
Now - the PC does have 3 HDD, not 4, and Win starts with No. "0" as system disk, and the game runs from F: of harddisk 0.

The drives seems to be fine, though, SMART and (self)tests and all :-/
And I check "teh internez", and winObj, and it seems it really meant drive "K" on the 4th HDD.

And I didn't had my USB drive plugged in at that point ... .

As I wrote, since restarting on Dec 11, 2014 everything worked ok again without any change to the hardware - didnt even move the *** thing, so faulty SATA cables/connectors couldnt have been "magically fixed" by wiggling them ...

Sometimes after Dec 15 I actually plugged the USB drive in to backup my data, had not trouble doing that, and no trouble since then.

Do you have any idea what that could have been?
(Been doing desktop service / user help desk for over 12 years, but cant remember to have seen something similar)

Honestly, I'm utterly clueless. Not that this isn't a very common experience in all my years dealing with computers... :lol:

I have the same problem.

FreeOrion_2015-05-25.5b90390 Test Win 32 (The latest Test-Download) does not show any text.
And it seems to be a rendering problem.

FreeOrion-7758-SDL-Test-Win32 works (just started it to see if there is text).

Sorry for replying to this half year old thread, but for me the problem is not "solved", also i wanted to give feedback that text in 7758-SDL-Test works.

If you start the program and see no readable text on the main menu screen, then check freeorion.log (located here), is there anything interesting that might indicate a problem?

You have an error about content script parsing failures in the case when it works. This suggests it's reading the wrong default directory in the other case. What actually causes the issue, I don't know, but perhaps a font file issue in just one of the installed default directories?

Perhaps try deleting your config.xml file before executing the newer version, to help make sure it doesn't use the wrong content directories.

Also, if you can figure out how to do so without text, go into the options menu, UI tab, and click the show font textures button. Does anything show up in the resulting window?
