Are any of the developers here doing any freelance software work? I ask because early in 2017 I plan to retire from my regular job doing software development for an aerospace company. I'm considering doing some part-time contracting or freelance just to keep my hand in.

I realize that things can vary by location and skill sets. I'm in the Midwestern part of the USA. I have worked on a variety of projects, from large to small, production and research. Lately it's been control programming for test instrumentation. Most of the work has been in C, C++, and C#.

If anyone has some experience in this area I'd be interested in hearing about it. And yes, I'm considering pitching in on FreeOrion as well.

That's nice to hear, but be warned: the pay is horrible... ;)

I have no freelance experiences as C programmer (tried for a while but I better don't leave my current position). Have several friends specialised in web design, server-side scripting and web-apps developing, mostly for Spanish contractors (we are Spanish), and I wouldn't recommend anything like that: clients are mostly unpleasant due to ignorance or the believe that IT workers are scammers, requirements vary over time even for close-budget contracts (then you can choose between accept to work more for the same pay or throw away the time you already spent on it), web-pages/web-apps for freelancing get draconian shares (10%-20%) of the payments and are of no use when a dispute arises (they just retain the money for themselves until client and worker get to an agreement, that usually means the honest client must accept the scammers demands or the honest workers must accept the abusive clients demands) plus the competition in there is fierce and awful for workers living in high standard countries (i.e., if you are living in India or China you can ask for considerably less pay for the same work and yet make it profitable for you). Anyways, this is for newcommers. People that already has a name and a reputation (either from previous works within such freelancing webs or from reputable forums such as Stack Overflow) will get better clients and better pay.
