You know what annoys me about MoO2? Plasma Cannon is the best weapon. When you get Plasma Cannon you're pretty much set for the whole game. And if you defeat the gaurdian or scrap an Antaran ship and get Death Ray or Partical Beam, you're screwed.

Phasors are better since they don't have to knock down all shields before hitting the hull. But if a planet has a planetary shield, then plasma cannons are the way to go.

Only if you don't have very many. In larger numbers, Plasma Cannons can cause massive destruction. Against a Barrier Shield, however, they are ineffective. Anything above Plasma Cannon will work, though.

Completely annihilates planetary shields. Usually in only one shot.

I agree, Stellar Convertor is a true super weapon in MOO2.

True, it does do massive damage. And it destroys planets. :D

But you can fit 40 Plasma Cannons in it's place. :(

Anyway, the reason I'm kind of annoyed at Plasma Cannons being the best weapon was that I was in a real pickle, so I attacked the Gaurdian to get Xentronium Armor with the last vestiges of my fleet, but I also got Death Ray, which replaced my Plasma Cannons, so my planetary defenses got owned. :(

Phasors are superior to plasma cannons for pure damage cause they can go straight through shields (shield piercing) while plasma cannons waste most of their damage taking the shields down first. So unless there are planetary shields, then ironically phasors cannot penetrate them or even damage them. But plasma cannons can damage them.

And the stellar converter is a noob weapon lol. Though I must admit that having lots of cruisers with heavily refined stellar converters is uber fun.

Do we have the same version of MoO2?

If I have a Doom Star with 50 Plasma Cannons, it will always be able to destroy more ships than if it had 50 shield piercing Phasors. And Heavy Plasma Cannon can't pierce a Barrier Shield at all.

phasors can only pierce shields when the ship being attacked doesnt have heavy shields. which also allows the ship equipped with them to have shields while in a nebula. incidentally i like death rays on my defenses since they prevent boarding of my space stations. the auto upgrade of weapons peeves me though because disruptors arent better then plasma canons in my opinion

Actually, the best weapon in MOO2 (Damage/Space) is Autofire Disruptors (the only problem is they need to be High energy focus+Heavy to get through strong planetary shields)

At this point I'd like to make a concept clear. A ship has 4 levels
of defense: Shield, Armor, Structure, and System. But when the

Lvl1: Shield Bypassed by the shield piercing ability
Lvl2: Armor Bypassed by the Achilles system
Lvl3: Structure Nothing left to protect it

Understand now? Shield piercing allows your weapons to completely
go through the shield, unless they got hard shield, then there's
nothing we can do about it. Combined with the Achilles system, all
that's left of the enemy that's worth a darn is the structure.

So the lesson for today is that with the modifications that you've
see so far, all you are shooting at, IS the structure!!

However, if your opponent has hard shields, shield piercing is impossible and you're in trouble since phasors do only very little damage.

But in that case plasmas are still gonna take all shields down before they hit the ship, while phasors are the second strongest and only have to take one shield side down.

Regardless, plasma cannons are enveloping and therefore do much more damage after getting through the shields. I have blown up enemy doom stars with one plasma cannon when they were in a nebula because the achilles targeting unit pierces armor and targets systems and the structural analyzer makes it do triple damage AND it hits 4 shield faces, quadrupleing the chance of a warp core breach as soon as it gets past the shield.

The structural analyzer only tripples the damage of weapons that ignore shields, eg phasors or EMG missiles. Bringing down the enemy shield does not count as the weapon ignonring or bypassing shields.


The only time plasma cannons are better then phasors is when the enemy has planetary shields. Cause phasors cannot do anything to them. But plasma cannons can.
