I recently added a new control mechanism for fleets, to mark them as passive or aggressive. This state can be set for a player's fleet by a new icon on the fleet's panel in the fleets window by clicking.

I notice even unarmed ships can be set to "aggressive", such as colony ships. Is that a meaningful choice?

I think at present it will result in them being attacked by enemies or monsters that would otherwise not have sufficient detection to do so. So... rarely? Maybe if ammo was a factor in combat? I suppose you could occasionally do so to reveal their presence for strategic/tactical reasons like baiting a fleet to come after them and leave its current location.

Note that fleets, not ships, are marked aggressive or passive.

As of 4951, i can't see if enemy or monster ships are set to aggressive or passive (and i guess you could argue that i should not see that), however, the galaxy is suddenly a very sleepy an uneventful place.

None of the armed monsters i've met attack me if my ships are set to passive (the original setting seems to be random for my ships.)

The aggression/passivity is intentionally hidden for ships you don't own.

I think the default is aggressive, though I don't know if it was in 4951, and it might be being set to passive somewhere to start. Regardless, I added SetPassive and SetAggressive effects to modify this, specifically with monsters in mind.

Also, in the newer versions (again, not sure about 4951) there are tests about visibility, so even if a monster fleet is aggressive, it shouldn't actually attack any fleets containing ships it can't see.

Even if i use SetAggressive, the monsters only attack if my ship is aggressive.
It looks like monsters have zero detection ability unless explicitly given it.

revision 4987.
"removed detector ship parts (often multiples) from monsters and gave all monster hulls 'vision' macros that have an accounting label, i.e. 'good vision' that makes sense for biologicals."

From your previous commit, looks like you also figured out that blind floaters/trees were the problem.
