Species specific "evolution" tree proposal
After reading through various threads on species balancing, I believe that the proposed nerfs on certain species would be detrimental to their uniqueness. This is why I'm thinking that a possible solution to both tone down(or buff) early game power would be to introduce a tech tree for each species, complete with their own specials. For example, the Laenfa species wouldn't have to start with +40 stealth off the bat, instead they could perhaps have a lower value but have the ability to unlock higher tiers of upgrades with research points (or possibly "evolution points" the earning of which can possibly be tied to performing certain actions or discovering something). This "evolution" tree will also have the added benefit of introducing more species specific benefits without pushing early game power through the roof, while at the same time allowing a gradual scaling of power as the game progresses. There could also be the existence of different branches of upgrades, which allows the player to customize his/her species based on play style or the needs of the game e.g. Laenfa going down the stealth branch may lock the industry branch. Any suggestions or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
Re: Species specific "evolution" tree proposal
For what it's worth, in my (stalled) work on redoing all the stealh stats for species and planets, I reduced the Laenfa to starting at 25, but also game them a massive reduction in costs for researching the stealth boosting techs, which in initial testing seemed to play much better.
Generally, I like the idea, but am wary of introducing a new mechanic, very much in favour of making more research areas cheaper/quicker for certain species or classes of species.
