I'd keep hull types and interior ship parts such as fuel tanks, shields, colony pods and engines for one category: "Ships" (Orange).
Add-on exterior ship parts such as weapons, troop pods, scanners, fuel scoops and hull plating would then be "Equipment"/"Systems" (Pink). Although I'd swap Ships to red and make Industry orange so that Ships+Systems are Red+Pink to match the close relation between them.

As I suggested in "Cool New Features", perhaps Equipment/Systems could be removed and replaced to a new design, for a fraction of the cost of a completely new build?
