Ibufor

#1 Post by Krikkitone »

A planet bound species with a natural affinity for space travel.

+++Naval Combat
--cannot colonize other planets (can build ships)

Description: Ibufor are crystalline entities capable of rapid changing of their shape. Their homeworld is infested with a highly mutated version of a long extinct species of space crystal. Portions of the crystal break off and become Ibufor young. Fragments of the crystal less than the size of a small moon cannot grow, so Ibufor feed off the Crystal. Their are benefits to being small though. Ibufor are small enough fragments that the energy fluctuations induced in the crystal by its internal radioactivity, can actually be channeled. This allows for intelligence, as well manifestations similar to that of Ship engines and sensors.
Ibufor nations battled over territories where the crystal either broke of many young Ibufor so they could educate them into their society or could be fed on for growth and repair. They rapidly progressed to the Space Age, achieving it around about the same time as they harnessed electricity. Soon they were building ships. After several devastating wars, a planetary 'fleet command' formed that acted as the military overseer of the planet and its defense. The nations still undertake wars but they are highly regulated to ensure that they don't involve massive levels of destruction. The nations often a mix of democracy and oligarchy. Both the entire population, and a small elite usually military economic group have significant influence.

Homeworld: Crystal is a Radiated world. The space crystal netowrk that makes up ane fourth of its mass puts out high levels of neutron radiation, and other other forms of radiation often found in Starlanes.

Reason for staying: The crystal can't go anywhere. large numbers of Ibufor can move somewhere, but they don't survive for too long without the crystal. (and you can't get any new Ibufor at that location)

I like these, but can we get a new name for them built of hard, chiming sounds? The names on my list, but i keep having to look up what they are since the name and concept don't seem to mesh.
