I'm trying to understand what all the combat/* things are for. I think some of that is being removed in the sdl migration branch, but can someone explain what this is all about ? (I've tried searching the archives) and what its future looks like...

Forum search can bring you to some threads discussing the plans/hopes/dreams for interactive combat. The most important detail, though, is that for quite some time now, the FO project has had no contributors with sufficient interest & skill to really do any of the Ogre programming for that. During my entire time here (a couple years) I can recall only a tiny bit of discussion beyond lamenting the lack of Ogre programmers & musings if that aspect of the project should be considered dead. If no one works on it and even no one knows about it any more, I vote for getting rid of it.
It's better to do a fresh start if someone new has interest in working on it.
