Reminds me of the Advance Wars base tile...

Image

Also, for production, I'd suggest something with a hammer and a partly built structure. On my mockup for the buildings window, I put some little icons with incomplete squares (representing partly built buildings) and a little hammer to indicate the number of buildings in progress on a particular planet.

Image

though this has not been approved / finalized, I rather like it, and could perhaps be a source of consistency...

Groovy... :)

Another test:

Thou i feel that this would be more of "construction" icon than production. Didnt sharpen or anything, just scaled.

Another...:

Possibly for learning? Had to edit the 16x16 size a bit, it got too blurry.

@Mystiqq & @Geoff the Medio
Geoff, if you are gonna use a hammer icon for production and Mystiqq, you are gonna use a wrench icon for construction, well it could get confusing. If two of the icons are tools, you think "now I know nothing about tools, and I could be damned if I remember whether this tool represents construction or production".

This is more like testing at the moment.

I think we'll have confusion no matter what, given the names of the categories... But I'm not really using a "hammer icon", and I'm not really using the icon in question to represent "production". The icon itself is a tiiiiiiny little thing with, of which a few pixels are in a roughly hammerlike shape, in addition to a step-ladder shape that I intended to be an incomplete building. And the icon is representing incomplete buildings, not a tech category... Whether incomplete buildings are "construction" or "production" or "buildings in progress" or some combination thereof is debatable... but there's not likely to be any confusion with my icon with the icons for tech categories, which are presented rather differently. So really I suppose I've just shot down my own theory of how to make things similar... oh well.

Mistiqq, you might want to consider making the tech icons resemble the resource icons as seen at the top of the screen in any screenshots. Food is wheat, industry (= production) is a gear, mining is a blocky mineral shape, and science is a test tube.

I picked 128x128 just because if we need some size bigger than 64x64, we'll have it. The icons will probably never appear at any size smaller than 32x32.

We won't be using multiple sizes unless there is a serious problem using one size.

The scaling interpolation used is simple linear filtering.

I like the brain icon for learning, including all the brain details, but not the head. How about just having the brain, without the human head? This seems less anthropocentric to me.

EDIT:
Uploaded new one, basicly the same as the old but with green color and used different scaling interpolation, its more simpler which i think represents more like what will be ingame.
Without the bicubic scaling method, the 4th one looks relatively ugly when compared.
I think it would be "wise" to have smaller icons made, instead of scaling down from 128x128.
Image

Here i edited the 4th icon a little to make it clearer. I think if 32x32 will be used, or smaller, they should have own picture.
This is purely my oppinion. Might be not the case ingame, since i have no idea what kind of quality the resizing is ingame.

Maybe not as useful as an Icon, but certainly in harmony with Mystiqq's brain icon.

I like cell shading, which is what that looks like. Obiwan, that brain might make a good image for a specific application or theory tech - so hang on to it if you don't mind us using it. Which I assume you posted for us to use

Its a nice looking model you've got there. :)

Ive got a small problem, is the smallest size now 32x32 or what? Where are those icons planned for exactly?

Yes its cool isnt it, this is ZBrush cell shading.
Heres some reduced to 128, to match Mystiqq's

Ive got to hit the sack right now, If your around Mystiqq could try reducing it to smaller sizes. My guess is it wont look too good.

Are you using Microangelo Mystiqq.

Yep definately all things posted are for FO in whatever form there needed.

I think this one is best so far, for construction, or something. :)

Image

Thought about the "brain" icon, and i think it needs something. It feels a bit empty or something...
EDIT:
I think ive gotta make the brain from better angle, after browsing some pretty hidious images on the net i think it would better to make from top view in this case. The "form" is better from that angle than from the side...

Again, simplest scale filtering method used which is obvious. :)

Not sure what good it will do if i resize that, its pretty much the same as the one i have and it seems that you have scaled that already yourself. :)

Also i think white is better for construction than grey(?).

It's probly fit for "The Physical Brain"... perhaps even more so with a bunch of lines pointing to various parts as if to label things, with blurry indistinct writing-ish symbols (so as to be language independent) at the other ends of the lines...

like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Rabbit_brain_pl.png

but with the lines all ending with horizontal sections with the "writing" over the top, and angled sections after the horiztonal sections actually connecting to the brain parts... (I hope that was coherent)

IMO we should keep the category icons flat and simple like the (awesome) one's Mystiqq's producing, and make the individual tech (and building) pictures with more colours, depth and small details.

The Cog and spanner is great, good harmony in the shapes.

I agree Geoff, the Icons will look superior with clean lines as Mystiqq is doing. For smaller sizes it will be important.
