I figured in the future (past .2) I'll be making a lot of models (hopefully lol) for FreeOrion, so i figured I'd just add them all to this topic. I got one, its about 75% done, and extremely unoptimized.

That ship looks cool.

I'ld say though, it is really hard to make ships look like they are the same design while still being different, IMO.

What program did you use?

1. Thanks a lot! :D Remember people, any critisism (sp?) good or bad is MUCH appreciated! I still gotta skin the beast though, that'll take like 3 weeks.
2. Yeah that'll be hard. My friend saus this looks like a cruiser from star wars, and I gotta agree.
3. Maya. I just don't like 3DSMax. IMO Maya is just easier, and from what I hear more powerful. 3DSMax is just more widely used, probably because it is cheaper. But I've gotten pretty good in Maya, and I know what like 50% of the modeling stuff does. Lol I can't really do much else, besides some basic skinning work. Animation... well I could learn that, but really, at least for now, there is no point. Also, the other stuff I don't really understand much. So modeling it is lol. :D

Ok, critisism, I don't like that cone on the front of the ship, it looks stream lined w/o it and it is sorta like gluing a cement block ontop of a stealth bomber. And it does sorta look like a SW ship.

I use 3d max cause it is want they teach us in school, atleast at mine. I don't know how to properly skin, I can poorly place a premade one though, which gives good results for now. But I do know how to model solid objects, and mesh bombs! Anyways, have you seen my ships, they are at the site at the link.

Edit: How many is a good amount of poly count? My smallest ship is 2500, my biggest is 8000. And if you are thinking, "well, atleast he doesn't model each one by hand." Hump..........

Yeah my friend (well I don't know him, we just both post at a star wars roleplaying RPG online) said to remove that too. I'm gonna edit it out tomorrow, tohugh I am thinking of just putting it at like a 10 degree angle so it sorta sticks out, but not much.

Edit: Woah nice skins on those models on your site. Heh if only I could skin like that I could cut my poly count in half lol.

What are your poly counts? Also, I don't know what a skin is, is it the mesh? Must be different lingo.

But, if it means the textures, they came with max and I would send them to if you want.

Edit: I am loading a new pic as we speak. It is really high res. And the largest ship isn't done yet. The 3 smaller ships are a complete design that hasn't been released.

About your poly counts, I know in battlefield 1942 weapons are like 500 polys, and veichles are like 2000, if I remember correctly....but BF1942 has like nothing to do with this......

Ok, I know that if I optimize the meshs, I can get the smallest one to be 300 poly, which would be great for a game with large battles. One thing, it messes up the mesh.

Btw, if we are going to have movies in the game, I can make models for it at a later date, but I can't render, my comp just sucks too much.
Also, rob, have you looked at the new pic?

Yeah I think we should *try* to get them to about 200 poly's IF POSSIBLE. As for your newest one, is it Raptor? Btw get maya so you can texture my stuff, cause I pretty much suck lol. :D j/k. But I really can't texture well. Btw you got AIM or ICQ or anything like that so it would be easier to communicate? Maybe you could post some of my model's with yours just because mine are like, good. (lol).

No, the smaller ships in the fleet 2 pic, the ones with the small wings and roll bars leading into the main hull. I do have Mirc.

Also, I am no good at texturing either. I can't place textures in a specific spot, to put a decal on or something. These I just slapped on, but they are good textures, wish I could claim them as mine.........

I will host pics if you want, on the site, but only pics, it is a geocities site after all.............

Also, I think there is a generic format most 3d programs can export too. I think it is *.3dmax or something.

No, only 3dsmax saves like that. Maya can save as a .mb or .ma (MayaBinary or MayaAscii). There is an "export" and "import" option but they save as .mb or .ma or .mi and some other weirds format. I know some people with photoshop and if I could get my things exported they could probably texture it for me. But alas I can not.

.dxf format can be used to transfer plain geometry from program to another, though it sometimes triples the polycon count.
There are lots of great tutorials available around the net, good site: http://www.3dtotal.com
In 3dsmax about texturing, simple way if you want to place texture to certain place, select textured object (like a wing of the ship), from modifiers add UWV mapping and select boxed. After that you can move the textures pivot point (in objects modifier menu, under the uwv mapping) to change the location of texture.

I had to map them like that, I just didn't know how to manipulate it, thx.

Can max export to that file type?
