At the centre of most galaxies there is quite often a super massive black hole and i think this should be brought into the game. I read earlier in a thread that players at the edge of the galaxy are at a disadvantage to players in the centre due to more restriction. By having the centre being occupied by a super massive black hole this might help to balance this difference.

Also I think it might be a good idea to bring in binary star systems as in where a solar system contains two stars. This could also lead to a special bonus for the system for things like solar orbital generators. For instance i think its blue or white stars that give the largest bonus but a binary pair of two white stars could give double the bonus or a pair or red stars could give the equivalent of a blue stars bonus.

I'm not sure about having planets orbit black holes though. An idea might be to leave out planets in black hole systems and either introduce a small chance that ships may be sucked in if they travel through the system or to stop travel through black hole systems entirely. Another idea however is that only certain types of planets could inhabit black hole systems as there would be no natural light; this would mean no 'terran' planets could have any hope of existing in these systems. However having this might cause certain species to have a distinct advantage so I don't know whether it would be a feasible idea.

Thanks for the great game btw! :D

I agree on binary stars and the ability to colonize near black holes but perhaps only with Research centers, orbital facilities to study black holes. i know if our society had achieved trans system travel i would enjoy the chance to study black holes up close. their can be special tools, power systems and --if you are so inclined.-- Weapons that a black hole research center would speed study for such as fuel compresses and magnetic mineral disassemblers/re-assemblers.

It's not necessarily a disadvantage.
While an edge player has fewer opportunities for expansion, he also has fewer directions that he needs to defend himself from.

I could be wrong, but isn't it speculated that the center of the galaxy contains a large amount of antimatter? That could become a tremendous resource to a player with access to it.

Relative proximity to the "Great Attractor" could easily qualify as an extremely dangerous environment, and make for a really fun place to play out "gold rush" scenarios.

As well, it makes fair sense as a location for finding ancient, lost technology (from planets and societies enveloped by the Core, of which there may no longer even be records of, predating the "Precursers"), spaceship graveyards, hunting ground for space monsters of the very old, very strong, very mean variety, and a unique location for persuing advanced physics research.

The Core itself may have it's own peculiarities and effects, perhaps acting itself as a resource (or several different resources), and/or "the ultimate space monster", of the indestructible, all-consuming variety.

I was thinking that stars should have specials - like planets - which would affect the whole system or the star itself.

One special could be a binary star. If the stars are orbiting close together all the plants would orbit around both stars (around their centre of mass). This would make it easy to add this to the game, as all that would be needed is a different picture for the star - in combat and on the planets sidebar. On the galactic map a single star image would still be ok as from a distance it would look like a single star.

A supermassive blackhole in the centre of the galaxy could just require a certain engine speed to allow travel past it. Other ships should just get a message that it is too dangerous to travel there (since someone who can fly a spaceship must know about blackholes!).

Binary star systems with stars far apart would involve planets orbiting each indivdual star - which would need a big change to the planets sidebar.

I think that in the game background something should be said about how stars with starlanes are rare. Only 10-500 stars in the galaxy have them. All the other stars would be useless to glactic empires as the travel times between them would be enormously long. Binary stars could destabilise the starlines - hence all the star systems in the game are (currently) single, when in real life more than half of stars are in binary systems.

Yeah, that's how i prefer to look at things. I hadn't thought of the binary star things before-- i suppose that sounds plausible enough.
