 Post subject: noob question: How to use a stargate?

How do I get a stargate to work? I've built stargate activators and beacons and noticed they disappear the turn after they're built, so I figured I need to build them when I need to use the stargate. I've tried moving ships into the stargate, through the stargate, and simply waiting at the system with the stargate.
