VGA planets, I think, is one - though I've never played it:

Outerspace, an opensource python based 4X:

Dont forget:
Imperium Galactica
Imperium Galactica II
(although i'd very much like to)

Now i'm gonna set the wayback machine to waaaaaaaay back....

Imperium (this was the great great granddaddy of Moo - not related to IG above AFAIK)
Millenium 2.2 (old Atari ST game different kinda thing to Moo/Civ but still 4x IMO))
Deuteros (sequel to M2.2)
Armada 2525
Stellar Crusade
Reach for the Stars
Supremacy
Fragile Allegiance
Iron Seed

If youre interested in what some of these games are about then http://www.the-underdogs.org/ has info. However, !!!WARNING!!! lately their site seems to host shiteware installing popups from hell, so be careful.

Yes, it is.

Thats a bit harsh. I think they were very good by providing a very solid story to the 4X theme. And theres an Imperium Galatica III.
Daveybaby wrote:Fragile Allegiance
I remember this little gem, which brings me to my additions...

Malkari (My review in the magazine made it out to be like a reworked Fragile Allegiance (it came out same time as ST:BOTF), but a quick scan of the internet has them raving about play-by-email play, and simultaneous (sp?) player turns.)

Heres some links:
http://www.cdmag.com/articles/020/067/m ... eview.html
This review sounds more like the one in my mag:
http://www.strategy-gaming.com/reviews/ ... ndex.shtml

Lastly, Pax Imperia: Eminent Domain (quick search shows this is actually a sequel to Pax Imperia) was the second 4X game I ever played and had some really good graphical menus. Probably not for the hardcore bunch, but i liked it...

Some links:
http://free-game-downloads.mosw.com/aba ... ia_2_.html

Others include (very loosely associated with the 4X theme):
Spaceward Ho! http://www3.sympatico.ca/maury/games/sp ... rd_Ho.html
Galatic Bloodshed
Galatic Conquest
Starweb
MegaWars III (and, i assume, I and II)

Heh, its a personal opinion - horses for courses innit? Did IGIII actually get released? The reason i didnt list it was because (IIRC) it was either canned, or it got transformed into more of a 'Homeworld' type of game. May be mistaken though.

Well, play.com are selling it here (not avaliable at the moment though), so im assuming it was released! :P
Quote from Play.com wrote:•Sci-fi Realtime-Strategy Game
•A great campaign with six parallel storylines
•Detailed missions and random missions
•Spectacular real-time space battles of astounding film quality
•New 3D-engine with fantastic lighting effects
•Physically correct flight models
•More than 100 planets in 20 solar systems
•6 different alien races driven by different AIs
•Individually configurable spaceships (weapons, sources of energy, engines, battle features, target features configurable for each individual weapon, formation features, shields)
•Different colonies (management, research, development, industry, shipbuilding)
•More than 50 alien and human characters
•More than 50 different weapons and devices
•30 Alien-Spaceships
•The open course of the game guarantees for a high replay value
Reading the synopsis (sp?) it looks like a cross between homeworld/watered down 4X game. More arcade-like and mainstream than a specialised 4X game like MoO.

What ones are still available to buy. The ones I have are:

MOO2, MOO3
GalCiv
Star Trek BOTF
Star Wars: Rebellion
Imperium Galactica (Won't run on Win XP)
Pax Imperia: Eminent Domain
Malkari
Stars! (though ive never been able to get it to work as it never came with a serial code. I took it back to the shop and recieved another but had the same problem. Their customer services never got back to me (the Xplosiv budget range i think) Might try and find a hack now. Be interesting to see how it plays)
VGA Planets

...and i can easily get my hands on Space Empires I, II, III, IV and Outerspace.

There any decent ones that im missing and could be found either on the web or bought via somewhere like eBay? Thanks! :D

Iron Seed

#10 Post by guiguibaah »

I remember Iron Seed - really weird game about some theology on Mars. Did anyone ever finish that game? I would run into a race that would ask for a spare part, but I couldn't figure out for the life of me how to trade it. Music was pretty good though.
There are three kinds of people in this world - those who can count, and those who can't.

Three more:

Star General
Emperor Of the Rising Sun
Starships Unlimited

These were different takes on the 4X theme compared to the more mainstream 'Master of Orion' view.

3001 - O'Connor's Fight (Amiga, simple game)
Star Control 2 - The Ur-Quan Masters (extremely funny space strategy game, open source remake available at: http://sc2.sourceforge.net )

Star control 2 is one of my all time favorites, but I don't think it counts as a 4x game.

Emperor Of the Rising Sun is a unique game, well worth trying. You can download it from underdogs....
