System Requirements

FreeOrion does not yet have official system requirements, and what it currently needs is highly likely to fluctuate throughout the development.
Recent versions likely will run best with at least 1 GHz processors and at least 2 GB of RAM, but requirements testing has not be conducted to determine this information. Earlier versions of FreeOrion have been reported to run on a 600MHz machine with 128 MB internal memory, however this did not constitute a good playing experience.
Additionally, FreeOrion uses OpenGL, meaning you should have a 3D accelerator card with support for OpenGL 2.0 or greater. Systems with OpenGL 1.5 may work with some graphical options turned off, however. A screen resolution of 1024x768 or larger is very strongly recommended, though the game can be run, awkwardly, at lower resolutions.
If you have experience running FreeOrion on a particular system and thought it was a bit slow, please add your system details here or post about it in the forums so that we can accumulate some more recent and useful guidelines of reasonable specifications.
- The Windows versions of FreeOrion generally runs on Windows XP (Service Pack 2 or later), Windows Vista or Windows 7. Earlier versions of FreeOrion were reported to run on Windows 2000 as well. Windows 8 will likely also run FreeOrion recent releases, and reports of testing would be appreciated.
- The Mac OSX versions of FreeOrion requires an Intel Mac with OSX 10.6 or later and OpenGL 2.0 support.
- The Linux versions of FreeOrion reportedly work on several modern Linux distributions on systems with OpenGL 2.0 support.
