It's defenitely a driver problem. I installed osx86 and downloaded the osx version and it works.

I'm no developer (cant pay attenetion long enough to learn to program), but how hard would it be to make a tutorial like in Wesnoth or something of the sort. This game has a very steep learning curve.

Would it be possible to use the old engine in the new game to get it to work?

When I startup FreeOrion on my laptop (Copmaq Presario c300) running xubuntu 9.10, Freeorion doesn't start. Run FreeOrion from the command line to see startup errors.
