Story: the ancients

The ancients are a race, which are currently extinct, that have progressed far and had technology that baffles even (in game) today's scientists. The player could discover a world where there are ruins of the ancients and learn of them. Learning them would reveal something about the ancients empire ...

Mechanism to help with balancing

How about a special mechanism that helps with balancing. This mechanism could allow points for techs, as a test. If the tech consumes more points then are available to it, the game throws an error. The same could be true for species design. How deep the tech is in the tech tree and the amount of pre...

Is it also possible to use it to delete planets and stars of neighboring systems, measured by distance?

Re: Website?

Well, ok. Tonight I'm willing to try (haven't got an excuse to not try). But I would like some feedback on my ideas. At the top I would like to put the FreeOrion logo. Below that a horizontal menu. At the right I'd like to put a download button. Below the download button a donate button. Below the m...

Re: Infrastructure (web space, email, irc, git, etc.)

And a formal contact email?

There are a myriad of reasons why someone would like to send an email to a specific person. Some of these are:
- legal;
- journalists looking for someone from the team to talk with.

Infrastructure (web space, email, irc, git, etc.)

I noticed that in another thread ( This one ) that payment for the web server may become an issue. That got me worried about this project. What if payments for the hosting stop all of a sudden and the website and forum are taken down? Are frequent backups made? Is there a plan B for the website? Aft...

Re: Website?

I'm willing to do it, but I still need to learn a lot. It gives me some incentive to use my (very limited) web development skills (html, some css, some javascript). However, I'm also afraid I might be inadequate for the job. Especially when communication with the server needs to happen (I'm clueless...

Re: Website?

Well, the current website is just a wiki. Most people will see the front page and think "oh, this doesn't look like much. I'll look somewhere else" or "oh, a wiki. I'm probably in the wrong place." Either is terrible. The webpage fails to communicate that this is the website of a...

Website?

The current website looks ugly. Why not make a new one? Someone with some pretty basic skills could whip up a site in no time. However, if some server side things need to happen, some more work is required... or you could use wordpress and have that serve the site. That being said, if you don't use ...

Re: Release early, release often

What I mean is releases, not per definition stable releases.

Have, for example, nightly builds on the website. This way people can see the project is still alive. That's a lot better then having to visit the forums (something most visitors of the website don't do).

Event: star goes supernova

The idea is that a star explodes, wiping out nearby systems (destroying all life, fleets and planets in systems being too close). There would be prior announcement (say 50 turns in advance and a visible marker on the star about to explode. If this happens at or near the home system of an empire, the...

Or the different species could have its own research tree and RP. Having their own, maybe completely different, structures, ships and effects. Making it attractive to use the other species.

Tech tree per species type

How about giving each species type its own tech tree, which would allow for differentiation in the species. Variations could be placed on anything which could be researched. Allowing species to exploit their niche to the fullest. While other things could be common through all or some tech trees. If ...

Release early, release often

Why not follow this principle in the release progression of freeorion? This allows for all those that don't have access to the source code to participate in development by helping out with scripting, graphics and sound and they can quickly see the results of their work in the next release. It's ok t...
