But they can't, and they don't, so order doesn't matter. This is why I called it the root cause: sequential attacks are invisible as long as the rest of the combat system is careful to hide them , but they make otherwise harmless features cause problems. In what way is it not solving the "root cause"? Nothing about ships is affected by being attacked unless they are destroyed, which isn't processed until after all attacks during a round. Making planets shoot first solves the immediate problem, but not the root cause, which is that attacks are affected by other attacks: there's an unintended dependency. Here's an updated version that fixes the duplicated “Cryonic Colony Ship”, and makes some of the longer names less ungainly: “Colony Blob” instead of “Organic Colony Ship”, “Troop Goop” for “Organic Troop Ship”, “Energy” instead of “Compressed Energy”.

Using sitrep icons, including the battle icon, in the map marker would be sensible. Hmm... which sitreps should be shown? The important ones are battles, new ships, and ship arrivals. I'm often uncertain about which systems had battles on the last turn, and have to check the sitrep to find out. Here's an updated version with only one weapon per three-slot ship, and with different names: “Cruiser”, “Robocruiser”, “Rock”, “Big Rock”. Ship descriptions avoid misleading nautical role names in favor of “fighter”.

The patch is missing combat/CombatEvent*. I also made LinkText color planets and ships by owner everywhere. Useful or overkill? Awesome! Fleets and empires should probably be colored too. For the sitrep, maybe whole messages should be tinted (like the vision circles) rather than coloring individual ...
