Re: BOTF 2, similar project

sorry for the late reply, there aren't any guides out there yet but I can give you a quick one if you want: First, pick up a race in the start screen, you might want to start with the Coalition of Planets since they are the easiest race to get minors diplomatically under their control. Next, send ou...

Re: BOTF 2, similar project

New Alpha 6 of "Birth of the Empires" is out. Thanks to pd here from the forums who lend us his one of his snazzy pictures to create a full race-specific UI skin out of it, there's a new race playable now, the Khaorons. Below are some screenshots which show the new race and some new features of this...

sorry, my mistake. I've taken a modified engine screenshot from Strooka now and labelled it accordingly.

Re: BOTF 2, similar project

BotE 0.71 has been released: http://svn.star-trek-games.com/birth/BotEA51FinalSetup.zip Since BOTF was basically MoO 2.5 (though the equation is not exact) it could be interesting to have a look at it how we solved certain things. Code is available at http://bote.codeplex.com . It looks like this: h...

Re: BOTF 2, similar project

The thread title should be "similar projects(!)", not project, since there are two games in total. Btw. "Birth of the Empires has gone open-source (bote.codeplex.com) so you might add it to your OSS space strategy games list too, tzlaine if you want ;). Btw. Supremacy is non-commercial and open-sour...

Re: Ending Typical Race Name Creation

the reason for -ians is mostly the planet's name someone has given to it before noticing there are living beings on that planet (advanced radioastronomy). So the Acamarians from Star Trek are named after the planet Acamar which is an arbitrarily-chosen name for a planet long discovered before anyone...

Re: X4 = dead?

look at freeorion wiki: http://www.freeorion.org/index.php/Space_Strategy_Games on gamespot.com for example you find those tbs games mentioned there on pretty high ranks (<200 out of 10000 games in total) and with high ratings. Even Star Trek Supremacy, a fan-made tbs game, is listed there on pos. 3...

Re: X4 = dead?

I wouldn't exactly call it out-of-style since there are constantly new tbs games hitting the market which are quite successful. Sure, FPS and MMOs have much wider player base but that does not mean there are no companies interested in creating tbs games..

Re: BOTF 2, similar project

the little project made it into Gamespot: http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/startreksupremacy/index.html?tag=result;title;0 , in the netherlands, it's currently even the top game of the week . I have a gut feeling this will lead to something in the future considering the license status of the g...

In case you don't this Creative Commons site already: http://freesound.iua.upf.edu/

it has plenty of usable sounds for combat and such and they seem pretty active with helping people.

Re: Different handling of Theories, Applications, and Refinement

for me, refinements are completely unrelated to upper-class techs bar for some theory tech prerequisite for further refinement like you mentioned but never a strict weapon type 1 mk3 equals weapon type 3 mk1 or something like that. They are just refinements giving either better damage values or less...

Re: Ogre Tech Demo

hm, if you're going with the 3D plane case strictly, we could think of another solution model derived from the atomic hull theory. When a certain amount of ships are within a square area of certain size, they are assigned to different height levels just like electrons which are in different quantum ...
