Read about Stars! battle engine . That sounds rather complicated and arbitrary. I guess it is better to stay away from something like this. Maybe not even change anything about the combat simulation. Using the most simple approach also has an advantage albeit its limitations. I guess I should start...

I don't even try to resemble something realistic. It's still a good starting point to figure out how a possible model could look like, right? I haven't thought about using the first icon for the basic "shipyard". That would probably fit best.

I made two more icons using The Silent One's beam graphic for the void shadow icon. And an icon for the space elevator: There are allready pull requests for these icons.

I once made a shader to render a sun wich loooks like this (the sun is rotating too fast in this animation though):
