Read about Stars! battle engine . That sounds rather complicated and arbitrary. I guess it is better to stay away from something like this. Maybe not even change anything about the combat simulation. Using the most simple approach also has an advantage albeit its limitations. I guess I should start...

I don't even try to resemble something realistic. It's still a good starting point to figure out how a possible model could look like, right? I haven't thought about using the first icon for the basic "shipyard". That would probably fit best.

I made some more icons, but these ones don't really look like shipyards. Maybe they are still usefull.

I once made a shader to render a sun wich loooks like this (the sun is rotating too fast in this animation though):

I just rendered a sphere and a sprite over that with a relatively simple shader wich just needs one additional texture (the same texture as for the sphere can be used).
