@The Silent One: I concur. I got the same impression from the movie. It was still entertaining though.

Technically you could attach any size weapon to any sized ship. Yes, in games and in fiction you can technically attach anything to anything. But we don't want to destroy the user's sense of disbelief. It would be very hard to convince someone that you can attach to a ship something that's twice as...

I second that. My admiration to the person who does it though.

Such hull-strength-weapon matching would be great with parallel research. (ie. you can only put Level 4 weapons on Level 4 (or higher) hull designs) But expanding this discussion logically, you would have to factor in from where that tiny ship would be drawing the power in order to be able to fire a...

Then we're in agreement. Pardon my re-stating your intentions.

*cost* efficiency. That's where you lost me. The previous post reads as your promoting small ships that were inefficient in battle. By inefficient, I meant cost inefficient. "Inefficient" does not mean slow by default, though it could be if you specified "time inefficient", but ...

My plan / suggestion for FO is to make small and medium ships very inefficient at fighting other ships, specifically so that nobody will build a lot of small and medium ships to fight other ships (regardless of those other ships' size(s)). (cost) efficiency has nothing to do with how long the battl...

All you do in total war is fight other units, however. Isn't that just a bit too complicated? We might think that this is a great idea, but would enough players care for it to make it worthwhlie to implement? And if you colonize a planet and you discover one of these specials, do you get to change your mind and colonize somewhere else if you don't like ...

Please don't reply about ship design systems in this thread. Make or find another thread if you want to discuss it in depth separately from the size issue. Marhawkman was just giving an example, Geoff, to try and give the clarification that you asked for. There was no need to be so critical. That w...

Wouldn't having it on a planet-scale be too small for a 4X game? Maybe it should be distant corners of the galaxy? But then we're really just talking about finding planet specials. I think that a planet-scale special would make more sense if we had the player's actively exploring the surface of indi...

Or like the orichalcum that is in so many Atlantis myths. To run the Atlantis tech, you need to have a source of orichalcum, which (it just so happens) you can only get at Atlantis. So we'd have a unique resource that opens up new paths for technology, but that once lost makes that researched techno...

I like the element of surprise that would add. Your opponent's frigates take heavy fire flanking your main fleet just to discover the ship they're trying to take out is a carrier. At which point the main fleet breaks off and lets the fighters finish them. :P I like the idea of having the Doom...

At least here's my response pd: It looks awesome. I would love to see that ship and a similarly themed fleet in the game.
