Are you implying that a strategy game cannot have a real time component to resolve battles?

Success strategy games like the total war series go exactly along this line...

For Realtime

I prefer realtime too. Full 3D immersive. Basically as Homeworld but without production and research. In a pre-battle screen, you would receive some pre-battle inteligence and then you could form taskforces and give then specific missions or orders. Orders like -Which planet to attack -Outflank the ...

Relic has recently released the code for Homeworld, and there is an open source project to port it
