I think this boost is "home-world". If I were to change species from etty to something else on that world, would the boost change from etty to whatever the new species is? Afaik the homeworld (the only species-specific growth boost) is a bonus because it's the homeworld, so if you change the specie...

Boost to Etty population everywhere connected, if you don't have another Etty homeworld set to growth in the same supply group.

There's no real trick apart setting a planet not to growth, and going to another planet, hovering over the Population icon and getting the list of boni.

Looks like the universe fields are generated in execute_turn_events() in turn_events.py and it looks it creates one field each turn. As you already said we are rather simulating space opera (so movies etc.) than reality. According to that we would rather need experts for scifi than for physics. Indeed.
