It goes without saying that, traditionally, games have swung in favour of offensive play, with powerful ships being able to all too easily overcome even massive planetary defences ... which is generally dull and disappointing. Galactic Civilisations II allows for different victory conditions, which ...

I think these ideas sound great, adding a tactical & strategic dimension to take success in battle beyond a simple measure-vs-measure approach; as well as incorporating a level of luck that can swing in the favour of a weaker combatant. It also adds so much potential excitement, fear & realism. True...

Roger that. There just seems to be a lot of activity at the Top-Down end of design by forum members, before any real bottom-up decisions have been made at bedrock level. I'll hold out and see what happens as we approach version 8... Other than the space-combat tactical engine, what are the other pri...

Have any decisions been made regarding how a race will be defined, in game-mechanical terms? If they are to be defined by a set of race abilities, have those abilities or other criteria been set in stone? If not, would it not be better to decide on these defining criteria first before detailing race...

I've put quite a few thoughts regarding space combat, tech and tactical engines on the Space Combat: Where & How? message board, that you might want to read. I haven't had time to read through the past posts on this forum, but will do at the first opportunity. Looking forward to the up-and-coming do...

The idea re: the Senate is just a small thought that could be developed as much or as little as desired, or not at all (like anything). The Moo series is essentially about feudal conflict; but I would like to see FreeOrion embracing the diplomatic, cultural & political Victory Conditions possible in...

Apologies for the size of this posting. Hope readers find it interesting. F.O. Tactical-engines and in-game tech research In any game like Master of Orion, it is obvious that in-game technological research and tactics go hand-in-hand. With advancements in tech, units are able to specialise; and wit...

Geoff

Okay. Thanks for the feedback. I'm going to post some thoughts on the space-combat design forum, regarding tactical engines & in-game research, which relates to the use of formations in combat.

Formations

Have any decisions been made about the use of formations in the game?

It would be good to have a brief update on where the land currently lies.
