I tried to convince everybody to name it 'Aquitaine' but they didn't want so much majesty right in the title.

Firefly would be at the top of my list. The scum under Joss Wheedon's boots would make better entertainment than most SciFi today. Battlestar Galactica is up there as well, though. Both BSG and Firefly are 'outside the box' series that aren't really about what they're about (Wheedon is an expert at ...

I just downloaded this from direct2drive a couple days ago (they have a patch for it out that deals with some of the micromanagement/refueling issues). I don't necessarily agree with all of the design decisions, but I understand them. This isn't 'Civ + Total War' - just like GalCiv is Civ in space, ...

I have to give the GalCiv guys credit. They set out to accomplish a very specific thing and they did just that. They're a small dev team (well, not FreeOrion small, but ... still small) and they've got a business model that works very well for them. I've heard that they're going to release an expans...

Space combat: next steps

This is an UNOFFICIAL design thread. No guarantees that anything here will be read by anyone who isn't under the influence. But I figured it's not too fair to all you guys who care about FreeOrion to leave you totally in the dark. Here's what we know about our space combat engine so far. It's not mu...

That page was actually supposed to remain internal until we'd got it to a point I really want to talk about publicly, but now that it's out, you can watch it develop over the next couple of weeks. I'll open up a design thread just to give you guys something relevant to talk about (though I'm not at ...

I've been delinquent in working on it but am gathering bits together now. It will spend some time in internal review and then hopefully be released here - or, at least, enough of it that we can start to steer brainstorming in the right direction.

At this point we aren't really willing to consider using a 3rd party application, though I suppose if the right one came along and made us all go 'rooawr?' then we'd consider it. but it'd have to be that specific sound.

Hiya Extro! Been a long time. :) We're currently working on an internal version of the space combat document so we can hammer out a few basics before having the sharks, er, the public, have at it. v0.4 is going to be a huge step for us and it's going to take a lot of work, so we're going to need all...

The big problem would not so much be exporting our gamestate (maybe not trivial, but not a huge deal) as much as it would be importing that gamestate into another system where everything matched up properly.

It's still extra work. We have to balance the tech tree already - by making branches exclusive, we basically have to duplicate other parts of the tree and spend twice as long balancing everything because the number of permutations and strategic choices you can make is dramatically increased. Again, ...

This came up during the tech tree discussion and was shot down on the grounds that it's a whole lotta extra work. One of those things that might appear post-v1.0.

In the meantime, probably we could just give bonuses to certain categories.

But really, do you expect to see 1.0 before 2010? It really depends on the pace at which we pick up developers, artists, and sound/FX engineers. If we never add a single person to the team we have now, then yeah, I'd say no sooner than 2010, certainly. But if can grow the team at a pace consistent ...

Design update - May 2006

Hi everybody, It's been several months since the design team gave any indication that we were, er, still here, so I thought I'd bring you all up to date on what's been going on. After the very preliminary space discussions we had on the design board, the FreeOrion admin team has been working out som...

FreeOrion v1.0 is already done. The only reason nobody knows about it is because I'm not letting anybody else play it until I beat Tyreth and tzlaine 2 out of 3.
