The principles seem sound to me. With freeorion I use git locally without telling it that the code is also in svn, but I use git svn at work (our company still uses svn, I'm working to fix that) and I am certain it can deal with such a process. I think the eventual actual difficulty settings will let players do this manually, if they want. Seems better than arbitrarily scaling it. Those wanting a challenge may want to try an early experimentors, low density -combo.

The main tree is meant to be compatible with the pre-packaged SDK for windows, which has older versions of various libraries, boost among them. Actually, the version of the 1.56 fixes in that patch should be compatible with the older boost, but since the sdl branch is the future, nobody has bothered...

Using boost 1.56 requires some adjustments in FreeOrion. The adjustments are present in the sdl branch. There are related patches in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=9130&p=72977&hilit=boost#p72977. They may or may not work to make also trunk tolerate boost 1.56.

Here's a fix to the stencil issue. It was a regression, sdl needs to to be told SDL_GL_STENCIL_SIZE after SDL_INIT_VIDEO.

I don't remember doing anything in the branch that I would expect affect the spawning of children. Sounds like an issue with the stencil buffer. Does the behaviour change between windowed and full screen?

I have a vague recollection of something throwing an error (which is caught) on linux, but crashing on windows back when I made the preview. Don't remember how it got resolved. Not the only. The same information is available in numeric form in the tooltip.
Plus, we can have some toggles in the final version also (Maybe in the options window).
