Re: Thanks for a great game

I quite like the idea that it would in general be impractical to research every tech. But one real downside of a huge tech tree is that it takes a longer time to figure out what you want to do. With a dozen branches available, how is a new player supposed to formulate a research strategy instead of ...

Re: Crash on desing rotation [SVN 7757]

Pressing the button to the right works by hiding the leftmost tab to make room to show more. If the leftmost tab is the last tab, hiding it wouldn't make sense, since there would be nothing left to see. This was precisely what the code was previously trying to do when the title of the last tab was w...

Re: no text / invisible font [7768]

What Operating System are you on? Can you find freeorion.log and see if there are error messages there? Also, if the buttons and the cursor are still visible, try clicking the fourth button from the top. That should be the load game screen, which contains coloured text, see if it is visible.

Re: About freeorion's performance

Perhaps you should try the latest testing release. Certain rendering performance improvements have landed after 0.4.4 was released. It would be of interest to hear how they affect you.

Re: Crash on desing rotation [SVN 7757]

You have summoned me not in vain. I figured this out using an artificially long title for the tab. The tabwnd wanted to show you the rest of the tab title by moving the view to the right, but there was nowhere to move to anymore, since it was at the last tab. This patch makes the right arrow be appr...

Desert Bus For Hope 8 is on

I thought I ought to mention mention that Desert Bus is on once more. It is an annual fundraiser for Child's Play, where comedians are forced to play the most tedious game ever 24 hours a day to gather money for children's hospitals. It is very entertaining, especially if you get sleep deprived alon...

Re: virtual deconstructor question

Here is my general owned member pointer workflow: Oh, this class owns this, but needs to store it as a pointer, so unique_ptr. We don't have unique_ptr. What's the closest thing? Scoped_ptr. Hmm... the lack of move semantics is creating annoying compilation issues. I'll just make it a raw pointer an...

Re: Found buggy tech and ship part.

You can only build ships with the robotic interface shields on colonies with a robotic species. That should be mentioned in the description of the part.

Yup, in refactoring I had replaced two old calls with just one new call, messing up the indexing. Here's a fix.

Re: [patch] Graphical Combat Summary

One compromise I can think of is giving every unit in a fleet the same width, but making that width be such that the total width is the health of the fleet. I find this confusing, though. Attached a same battle in both ways.

Re: [patch] Graphical Combat Summary

Then what does the height of the green part of the bar indicate? That is also the health of the ship, with the red part being damage, as one would expect. The axis labels state the fact that y is unit health. The x axis is fleet health, which is a sum of the unit healths and therefore the unit heal...

[patch] Tech Tree Arc Caching

The fact that Vezzra reported the mad adventure optimization actually reducing his framerate for the tech tree regardless of the zoom level made me suspect it was something to do with the drawing of the arcs. I did toy with them when initially figuring out the buffer based approach. The result of th...

Re: Error running freeorion

Here are a couple of commands that may provide you with relevant information: dpkg -S libXaw.so.7 That should tell you which package, if any, provides that file. For me on Ubuntu 14.04 it says: libxaw7:amd64: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libXaw.so.7 ldd freeorion | grep Xaw Ldd finds the libraries a bi...
