However, colony ships as they work today start to get micro-managy pretty quickly. Ideally, you want to have the colony ship ready to colonize any planet as soon as it comes under your control. This means knowing where the matching shipyard is, knowing how many of the colony ships being built there...

A targeting system, based on depreciation of enemy firepower, would be a really nice feature, because, as it is now, once you've got a fleet stuffed with enough ships, those will soak all damage and the likelihood of a ship destroyed falls pretty low.

additional beneficial factors of outposters over colonizers: - outposters can be build everywhere regardless of species, so this is going to save you alot of travel-time, because you could use the very nearest shipyard - if you are using specialized outposters that require an extra shipyard (or two)...

Some of the "species-penalties" (such as bad piloting) can easily be overcome and therefore, aren't a real long-term penalty, at all. I once used the Asteroid Line, just to check them out. Put nothing but 2*Crystallized Armour Plates on them, getting these stats: - 71 HP (76 with Reinforced) - 5 shields + 5 from Scattered = 10 - 26 production costs that seemed dead cheap to me.
