slight correction, WH40K Dawn of War, a 'rts' type game, although it's more in the nature of tactics, as most other 'rts' are, if you look at it more closely...but there is a GWI computer game, wich is quite similar to starcraft in look/feel.....personaly i prefer the DoW. and aliens are biomechanic...

geoff: the only way for more power(in a laser) to have a downside, is if you include heat/power management, and asfar as i know, such will not be in....so the only possible downsides left are 'cost' and space it takes, just pointing out the obviuos here.

in space things are slightly different from inside atmosphere....drakich, this is for you. for one, the theoretical limit for a laser is, well, lets just say that travel time and accuracy of mount are the only things you need to worry about, as cohesion loss, is NOT that big of a problem in space.. ...

ranos: the idea of a 'alpha strike' ship, does interest me, not enough power generation for continous fire, but 'energy reserves' to lob of a full blast or two, more blast for the buck, but at a cost of endurance, after that...well hopefully you are out of targets before you are out of juice.... /ed...

note, a two tier system is a good idea, but one should illustrate the possible differences. #1 take power plants, most likely the first tier would have a power plant that could handle max load, at all times, even if this is a EXTREMELY unlikely scenario.....while a advanced user might add a few acc'...

well, i'll just say these few things. #1 system resources is NOT a reason to skip features, cant recall if anone tried that one here, but computers like numbers, and can eat through lots of them, aslong as it's pure math. #2 KISS is imho just about the most lame excuse i have ever heard for cutting ...
