Re: Thoughts on latest release...

Hi, Found a use for the NRH: A high-research species might like the idea of rapidly getting here. The extra building needed is cheap. The 6 external and 1 internal slots are quite serviceable for a long time. Instead of researching better hulls, going for other technology is quite attractive. Not as...

Re: Thoughts on latest release...

Hi, Well, sometimes the AI can do good things! I was in a perfect position for Egassem, with two AIs right on top of me, except that I wasn't Egassem but Chato. Despite building as fast as I could, the AI did a very good job of getting its forces to one of my planets before I could make it, mutually...

Re: Thoughts on latest release...

Hi, there are always going to be edge case crashes with the massive number of OS/hardware/graphics driver/etc configurations but we want to squash as many as we can. Scarily enough, my hw is very vanilla: Sandy Bridge with 4gb ram and integrated graphics. I'll rememeber files. Yup, a huge part of me...

Re: Thoughts on latest release...

Hi, It's micromanage-y, but it works. I asked about a way to freeze items on the build queue, and I think they might be looking at that. Yeah. More clicking! It would be good to have a separate "defer" list. So there's a production queue, which I'd like to open as a window (not a screen) a...

Re: Thoughts on latest release...

Hi, Of course, probably the most important UI feature to look at is a button to disable the periodic BSoD that I get! (As well as the occasional CTD.) (Any files you want from that?) Gameplay from last night: * Exobots+Microgravity is a potent combination. Especially if your main species' Industry h...

Re: Thoughts on latest release...

The techs that adapt you to planets are among the best in the game. I think. I'm new at this. :) Both Terraforming and Gaia Transformation are underwhelming, except perhaps on sparse maps: Why spend industry to modify your planet when you can spend industry to find or (better) conquer another? Two c...

Re: Thoughts on latest release...

Hi, * Every planet should have an icon next to its name in its system window that when you click on it, you go to the production screen for that planet with a *single click*. Is double-clicking really so much more trouble...? Yes. It doesn't seem like it should be. It does seem like I'm being silly ...

Re: Ultimate Strategies

Nah, game clearly won, but you haven't finished exploring, if you can't see the whole map you can't even pretend to claim victory ;-) More seriously, I think some sort of diplomacy would be really good at this stage, if several of those AIs merged together there'd still be a challenge for you. No i...

Re: Thoughts on latest release...

Thoughts from playing more, especially regarding the UI: * The AI is pretty incapable of using (reaching?) the upper half of the tech tree. Collapse a star system into oblivion? Build and exploit starlanes? Etc. * I found a use for some probably overcosted and underwhelming tech: If you're Gyasche, ...

(It may be that the only change needed for shields is to have the better shield techs automatically upgrade the defense grid)

Re: Thoughts on latest release...

Hi, Self Sustaining is probably overpowered, I want to redo the whole growth tech line for balance and have different techs for different metabolisms, I like that self sustaining gives an early boost, I don't like that near the end it's basically three free growth special boosts and all other techs ...

Re: Thoughts on latest release...

Hi, Self-sustaining is really good, but the two things that mitigate against it are that a) Eventually, anyone can grab all the specials, and then be equal, and b) The only self-sustaining species is *also* saddled with Xenophobic and Narrow Range, which make the entire package balanced. Anyway, Ken

Re: Thoughts on latest release...

Hi, Random isn't actually a map type, it merely selects one of the other types at random so depending on what it selects you could be getting anything: personally I mostly play the Irregular layout (which is new, the old algorithm called Irregular is now "Box"). Some work was done to reduc...

Thoughts on latest release...

Hi, I last tried out FreeOrion two years ago, and have been playing with the latest stable release. AI set to Aggressive. (Not sure Maniacal is harder, because suicidal aggression maybe isn't so awesome.) Some thoughts about my experience... * Periodically crashes on Windows 7. I even got a BSoD. * ...
