One of the graphics sites I frequent has just posted the finalists for their latest competition, entitled "The Grand Space Opera Challenge." There's about 270 entries, and there's some really cool ones in there, so I figured I'd share:

Been playing around with wings 3d a bit. Unfortunately, for who knows what reason, I can't seem to save the rendered Open GL file. Anyhow, I exported to 3ds format, and if someone like Obiwan wants to render them up and post pics it would be appreciated. Also if you wanna tweak 'em a bit go for it!!

Great yor using Wings. Keep it up.

Looks like you made these out of a single cone. My guess is youve used the 'tighten' command to exagirate the shape.
This function is designed to even out vertices. But by going too far, a shape thats impossibe in the real world has been produced.

the dark rendered areas are where the faces have become inverted. In other words the 'normals' are facing the wrong way.

To understand this produce a sphere, select it. and >View/Show Normals.
Now select a vertice or face and move it along its normal until travels though the model and out the other side.

This is the bad thing that has happened to your models, something to be avoided.
Hope this helps.

Damn... and I did so much like that function... at least the wireframe model looks nice!! Ahh well, gonna try again... And yeah, you'd be surprised what you can get starting with a cone.

Before tightening:

After tightening -50%:

3ds source

Conclusion: Maybe it was the way I rendered those 1st 2 ships?? This was rendered with slightly different settings, and as you can see tightening doesn't seem to effect it too much.
