The correct link is http://www.freeorion.org/index.php/Audio now.
The audio resources in the game will fall under a Creative Commons License (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/). A decision about exactly which one we will use is forthcoming.
Any progress on that one?

So it is. :)

Here's the current (version 2.5) list of Creative Commons options. They are less numerous and better named than I remember the previous set (2.0?) being, but I could be wrong.

http://creativecommons.org/license/meet-the-licenses

I've talked Tyreth into tentatively letting me select the BY-NC-SA license. That's the one I would want for my own stuff, anyway, and we should probably use the same one for all FO audio.

(This is still subject to final approval from the great and mighty Tyrethosaurus Hex, who was initially keen on the BY-SA one. Also, a while back I probably would've wanted the BY-NC-ND one for myself, but my enlightened world view and Gui's audio prowess have changed my mind. :)

Please post any thoughts or objections in this thread.

Whelp I just read that article Geoff, and most of the following comments. One thing that seemed to be brought up a lot was how music/audio is arguably a bit of a special case or in a different category from software and written text. Another thing to notice was that there was hardly a consensus agreement with the article in the responses.

I agree with the bulk of them in that it points out non-obvious drawbacks with -NC, however it hasn't really succeeded in changing my mind personally, either. I'll bug Tyreth again next time he's around, maybe have him read it too, maybe come to a final decision if we're lucky, but like I said above, there was already "tentative approval".

I also need to get some clarification on whether everyone supplying audio will have to agree to use the same CC terms or not; I'd rather not force -NC on other people if they don't want it, for example.

Right, so I guess there's a good reason why "tentative approval" is called tentative. ;)

Sorry for taking so long to get around to this, but basically a final decision has been reached and that is that everything is going to have to use the same license, that being BY-SA. If nothing else there are practical reasons for this, which were probably inevitable once fully thought out. Wiki updated.

I'm not personally thrilled about it, but am going to go along with it... benefits outweighing risks and all that. :)

Audio people, please look at this post in Graphics about a proposed change to the version of the CC license we currently use (2.5 -> 3.0).

http://creativecommons.org/about/licenses seems to be the most current (working) link to license information
