FreeOrion v0.4.10 released

#1 Post by Vezzra »

FreeOrion v0.4.10 has been released.

This is the version of FreeOrion recommended for those who just want to play and enjoy the game. So unless you want to participate in game development or play the latest development version with all the new features (but potentially more bugs), this stable release is for you.

Quite unusual for us, this time it took us less than half a year to get the next release out. But then, it has been supposed to be a "quick" (by our standards) release cycle, with the primary focus to replace our Python2 dependency with Python3 (which has been way overdue). So, although the switch to Python3 hasn't been the only "big" change, 0.4.10 can be considered the "Python 3" release.

That said, it still took us longer than planned (we just had to retain some normalcy, you see ;)). Then again, another unusual thing helped us so the delay wasn't greater, which is that already our first release candidate turned out to be sufficiently stable and robust to be declared the official release. There's a first for everything, isn't it? ;)

So it's time again to say thank you to all our devs, contributors, playtesters - without all of you this project would have been dead long ago! :D

Finally yet another unusual thing (at least in this place), a small peek preview: 0.4.10 is going to be the last release of the long running 0.4 releases. After almost a decade the next release will be 0.5, introducing Government and a new resource, Influence. Subsequent releases will see (among other things of course) the introduction of game mechanics that build upon those basic elements, and (hopefully) will bring a whole new dimension to gameplay.

Follow FreeOrion on Twitter if you want to receive related news, especially announcements of releases.

Download:

Get FreeOrion here, for OSX and Windows.

Linux users can either get the snap package we provide on snapcraft.io (please be patient, it may take a few days until the 0.4.10 snap is available), or try to get the new release from the respective package repositories of their distributions (if your distro maintains FreeOrion packages). After the switch to Python3 distros which had to remove FreeOrion hopefully will re-add it. If you can't use our snap package, and your distro does not maintain FreeOrion packages, Linux users need to build FreeOrion with cmake/make per the instructions here and here.

Key Changes:
(since v0.4.9 February 2018)
  • Python 3.5+ is now supported and required. Python 2 dependence is removed
  • The Arc Disruptor weapon part and techs have been added, which are useful with bad pilots, against large numbers of cheap targets, and against ships without shields
  • The possible targets for each weapon type has been limited, making weapon types useful in different situations
  • Fighters have been rebalanced and the Heavy Bomber fighter type was added
  • Added happiness requirements for normal planet resource meter growth
  • Added team-based player homeworld placement for multiplayer games
  • Rebalanced some bonuses from techs and specials to make high population less important and mitigate runaway empire growth "snowballing"
