Windows 98

#1 Post by AdamKL » Wed Jan 19, 2005 8:22 pm

Hello

First, I stepped into FreeOrion when looking for alternative for MOO3 (becouse it really sucks). THen I found it, downloaded it and ooooooh... orgasm ;)

Unfortunetly my orgasm was not so big. I'm running FreeOrion on a bit old computer (K8 350MHz, S3 Virge 2MB, 512MB RAM) running Windows 98. Whole interface was very sloooow. It toks few seconds to react when I clicked aything - the game is unplayable :(

I''ve tried last official beta (0.2). I seen, there is lots of debug output, maybe turning it off would speed things a bit?

Can someone provide a custom windows binary with all debugging switched off? (sorry, I cannot compile it - no resources).

Btw. I postted here becouse I couldn't find any suitable forum for reporting bugs.

Aditionaly: I may intend to compile FreeOrion for even slower machine (and diffrent platform, where I have resources like gcc and lots more. Do you think that 66-100 bogomips would be enougf for FreeOrion?

Have you tried downloading the newest OpenGL drivers for your grafic card? I had the same problem and that fixed it for me.

My graphis card is very old one (S3 Virge, 2MB, PCI), and I have the latest drivers possible.

In this case I don't think disabling the debugging will help much :)

There is no such thing as a K8 350MHz. The processor that is sometimes referred to as K8 is the Athlon 64, which starts at 2800+. While its actual clock speed is lower than that, it is still way beyond 350MHz.

And I do not see how the subject "Windows 98" fits this thread, for the OS is a rather unimportant part of this question...

I suppose he is talking about a K6.

Well, those K6 with 300-400 Mhz are very usefull: if you want a linux router. You can even play a few old games with them. But trying to run a 3D game with a S3? IIRC I replaced my S3 5-6 years ago. And my K6 400 Mhz 2 years ago. And I usually replace only when my stuff is realy outdated.
