Why do you play MOO style games? Do you play to build technology, or for military conquest, single player, multi player, ...?

I like all of this, but the poll only allows one to select.

I actually haven't played MoO or any other games since about 3-4 years, but I guess military conquest was always the most fun to me.

Yes, technology plus millitary conquest is always the most fun.

I always liked MoO more than Civ. Even if they a from the same kind. But in additional MoO is SciFi!!! :)

For me I think what I like most about moo style games is the advancement of the race I am playing from a primitve spacefaring race using fusion drives to a galaxywide space empire connected by star gates.
So I will select Techtree, although this option does not really encompass everything I would like it to.

Tech Tree really affects everything else in the game. If the tech tree sucks then space combat sucks, and every other part as well. Eg, if there were only one type of weapon in the tech tree, then space combat would be poor. But if the tech tree allowed many tactical and strategical effects for other parts of the game, then 'bingo'.

Definately the tech tree. No idea why though.
Generally once I've reached top-tech in a game I get bored. Strange but true.

My favorite is trying to figure out new race ideas.

Where's the "Because chicks dig it" option? That's why I play.

Is that really the reason you play? I always thought that "chicks hate it" since it takes so much time away from them :)

It's interesting to note not just what we like about these games, but what is necesary.

I think one of the most important things, that for me can ruin the whole game if done wrong, is scale. People have different ideas of the scale they like, eg in Moo3 techs came too fast, offroad travel took too long. Some people do however like a large amount of time spent on each turn, for me, I like the Moo2 scale. In my mind, that was perfect. I hope we get this right.

Hmm.... My initial impression? Research isn't that hard. Being able to buy research OR do it the hard is nice. Ships don't take much to build either. (assuming you have the money) It's the fuel system that's annoying. way too little in the Tarkan ships... You start out with a max range of 11 BUT that's not the distance you can go from your territory, it's the total distance your ship can travel, before running out of fuel and getting stranded. Tankers are SO vitalllll It's not funny. BAD!!!!

I liked the rest of the game though. I'd just barely managed to find a halfway decent planet before I had to quit and go to work.

EDIT: D'OH!!! Wrong thread.....

Since different people have a different idea of the "timing" of stuff. Maybe we could build the tech advances and such with a "fudge factor" (need a better name though.) This would allow those who want the tech to be less of a factor to make it harder to build tech, etc. If we keep the list of these options short the AI shouldn't have too much problem as it could be a number that feeds into the AI decision making.
