We need a close all window panes button.

#1 Post by xlightwavex »

Ive played this on and off for a long while.
One thing i think of every time i pick it up after a bit is...

I need a "close all these damn windows" button, so i can see the starmap asap.

It's annoying to have to close 2 things, plus maybe click left or was it right on open space ect...
To see the starmap in full. It would be nice if the process of "how do i close all this junk" ^^.
Were automated to a simple button.

[X] or [StarMap]

Not having it makes the game UI feel slow and unwieldy, even if its not the case.

It would be way easier to have a close button icon up top, to close it all, except for the starmap.
Then i can just open what i want open for my next action.

Anyways that's my returned to play first impression feedback this time around.
I really think if nothing else it should be a option or someone should just add it.

Did you know about the ESC key? Clicking on it will close the last window you open, and then the previous one (I think that's the order, last in first out), so that clicking it repeatedly will close every window (which means that 3-4 ESCs will close most windows most of the time).
This works fine for most purposes, but it is true that a dedicated button 'X' (or 'H') to hide all currently open windows, and if clicked again then show them all again (but not windows that were not open when first clicking 'X').

Maybe post a pull request (or issue? still not sure what's the best place for feature requests) on https://github.com/freeorion/freeorion

Unless you have code to contributea pull request is pointless (you can't even open one), so an issue as feature request would be the way to go.

Did you know about the ESC key?
Another reason it's needed i didn't, new players wont either.
Id wager that they would expect to find one right by all the window open buttons.

re: edit: I did as you suggested the link is here. https://github.com/freeorion/freeorion/issues/2053

Anyways thanks for your attention, the game is looking very good compared to years ago.
Still missing that close all windows and show the starmap button though.

I really don't see the problem with hitting the 'esc' key a couple of times.
The real problem is documentation. I didn't know about it either until I
believe I read about it here on the forums. But to me, as a regular user
of 'vi', it comes naturally.
(Man, I hate it when I hit 'esc' when I'm in Notepad :x )

You know, using "vi" and "naturally" in the same sentence is kind of... bizarre?
