Can beam weapons require several slots, like fighters do?

Drones (fighters) require two slots to work, one internal (hangar) and one external (launch bay). I'd like to require multiple slots for other weapons. E.g. a direct damage weapon (like the death ray) that requires one external and one internal (say cannon and ammo storage).
Can this be done with current mechanics?

The internal part would have no relevant meters, it's just a way to play with bigger weapons (bigger in the sense that require more space in the ship, and thus can deal more damage or more shots per round).

Yes it is possible to script changes to damage meter. So it could be zero by default and the secondary part could change it.

Solarweb does something similar
Any code or patches in anything posted here is released under the CC and GPL licences in use for the FO project.
