Starbases

#1 Post by yandonman » Fri Oct 12, 2012 9:00 am

Just an idea: I find at times that I want to build an outpost/presence at a planetless star or deep space. The tool that I keep wanting to reach for is a Starbase. I would build a "construction ship" that would fly to the system and then build a "Starbase" (basically a super small planet) that I could build a subset of buildings on (such as a shipyard and orbital dry dock). It would extend the supply line. It could also provide defense for the system. It would cost more than an artificial planet. And there's no reason why you couldn't build a Starbase at a system that planets existed at.

The maps I've been playing, there's usually one or two potentially interesting systems that I might use a starbase at. However, if playing on a more sparse map (lots of deep space, etc), it might be more valuable.

Also, it could just be a super expensive ship with high hull, low movement and that could be built via a "construction ship".

Who doesn't want to build a Deep Space 9 or a Babylon 5?

Deep Space is partly an attempt to add some varied terrain to the galaxy. I think it's useful to have some regions that can't readily be settled. Adding a relatively easy means to settle them somewhat turns them into just another system type, which I'm reluctant to do...

I see, and agree, with your points. What if it was not easy? Such as having to build a Starbase Construction Facility at a system with an asteroid field. The Starbase would be constructed in that system. It would be expensive. The starbase could move like a ship, but it moves very slowly (something like 10 turns to move down a starlane). Additionally, weapons and shields are offline for the duration of the move and for +5 turns after parking (lore: takes a lot of energy to move this thing - generally not meant to be mobile).

With that much micromanagement needed to get one into place (aka: big investment would need a fleet escort to place on the board due to vulnerability while moving/parking), it would have to be a strategically interesting deep space. The more sparse the map, the more viable this would become.

Granted, it's more of a fun sci-fi idea.
