If your email address is right, you are connecting using the right user name, the server is sending the email to you... What can be the problem then?

Passwords are necessary to protect your empire from being played by any stranger. OTP are a good way for that.

Why are OTP passwords even necessary? Or emails as delivery method?
There no any UI for the players to define or change passwords so I decided One-Time Passwords are fine way.

E-mail isn't necessary, there are also XMPP IM supported.

If that's the case, an assuming you manage to overcome your difficulties to join the server, we will be 7 players and we should decide whether we'll do a no-diplomacy game or a free-diplomacy game. Since last game was no-diplomacy, I vote for free-diplomacy (and pray for not getting a xenophobic species).
BTW, I don't understand that last part about arguing. What needs to be argued or defined? FreeOrion is a 4x space game inspired by Master of Orion and other similar games and can run in many computers, no need for definitions.

Just one thing seems odd: the Messages window (chat) resets to its default dimensions each time I connect (either single-player or server).

It was fixed in https://github.com/freeorion/freeorion/issues/2817 but I need to update server to master as well.

XMPP works flawlessly for me, never tried e-mail for the OTPs.
